This is like who was best Pelé or Messi? Messi is by far the better player cause the tempo and skills of football is so different it´s nearly another sport. We know how good Messi is but we have no idea if Pelé would have what it takes in modern times. The facts: He didn´t shoot as hard and precise as Messi, he didn't run as fast with the boll, etc. So my vote goes to Messi and in the same way my vote goes to Carlsen.

  • @jimpark8379

Fischer's peak rating was 2785. Accounting for ratings inflation, he would be 2900 today. At his peak he dismantled all the top players. Carlsen drew with Karjakin and Caruana, and only beat an aged, beyond his prime Anand and a dead Nepomniatchi who was a zombie after that 200 move loss and who, despite being a brilliant and creative attacking player, is one of the most blunder prone top players in the history of chess. It's too bad Fischer went crazy and stopped playing because he was on the path to becoming the god of chess. Nobody has taken on the entire Soviet system and beat them like Fischer did. Plus, they used to adjourn games back then and Fischer raised his analysis powers where he was out analyzing teams of Soviet super GMs, reaching a level of adjournment analysis matched only by Kasparov. I don't think Carlsen or any future players will reach Fischer or Kasparov level, because they will not get the training of deep analysis of adjourned games.

I really like this game (in fact, I've always appreciated Steinitz's chivalry-style but still precise, calculated play here) - but considering the big question in the title card.. Hmm, if both (let's be fair - each in their prime) played together a match of 10+ games, Steinitz would score a few wins, but only as a mitigatiion of the end result, which, I firmly believer, would be a crushing defeat. If in doubt, just look at their scores against another chess legend - Adolf Anderssen 🙂 Also, I truly think Morphy was (and still is) superior to anyone else ever his ability to play engine-perfect moves as-if effortlessly & at any moment and also, to adapt ultra-swiftly to the style of his opponents, just after a game or two..

Time and again I am struck by the two ways of analyzing a game. (1) CONSEQUENCE/RESULT oriented. What do the moves (plans) do, and what would happen if this or another move is made? (2) DEVELOPMENT/GENESIS oriented. How does a player think of this or that move (plan)? You did a very good job of trying to get at both, but still focused more on the former -- understandable with a player like Tal, when the consequences are so intensely complicated and in need of explanation. Additionally, it's probably impossible to get inside their heads to understand how they came up with various plans, without talking to them right after the game. I personally wonder how Tal came up with 18. h4! Clearly it protects the bishop, allows the rook lift, and makes the passed pawn itself more powerful by advancing. So many other moves to be considered, but how do you find moves like this? It's amazing! Thanks for your thoughtful analysis. I am always absorbed by your videos, and learn so much. :)

The entire game felt like a rollercoaster! Fischer was loving risky business and was always treading on thin ice. It was mind-boggling to play pawn a7 at the end instead of Be3, demonstrating that he can win even if he lets black promote his c pawn into a queen with a check! Crazy!
